Prepare for learning and studying
Whether you’re a first-time or returning student, our staff are here to ensure you have an excellent learning experience.
This page will help you discover the digital technologies that support your studies and find out who can assist with academic skills like referencing and doing research.
Canvas
Canvas contains all your module information, including lecture materials, resources and assignment support. It is also the place where you will submit online assessments and receive feedback.
More information about Canvas is provided during your induction, but you can watch this introductory video before you arrive on campus.
Studying for success short online course
Studying for Success is a short course that you can complete before you arrive at LJMU. It is designed to introduce you to some of the core features of Canvas so that you can become familiar with the system before you start your studies. The course covers some of the basic skills that you will need for successful study at university.
Please note:
This course will be implementing an AI powered support chat system for all new undergraduate students to access the information most important to your studies. All students will be enrolled onto the new system in early to mid-August 2024.

Academic Achievement and Subject Librarians
Once you begin your studies, you will be able to get dedicated support from the Academic Achievement Team. They are based within the Student Life Building.
They can explain university terminology and assessment expectations to you. They also provide guidance on organising your workload and developing your academic writing or use of maths. The Academic Achievement Team can help you to understand and act on feedback and improve your work. Your Subject Librarians can help you find the reading materials you need, and how to reference your work.
Check for any updates from your tutors
Your tutors will direct your learning each week with recommended reading and writing activities. You will receive these updates via email or through Canvas. Don’t forget to check your Canvas and LJMU email on a regular basis.
