While you are away

While you're away, it's important to remember the requirements of your programme, including any paperwork or promotional activities. Below, you will find a list of requirements and some important information on what to do if you need help abroad.

Health and safety

While you're abroad, it is important to remain aware of the safety procedures for where you are travelling to. We advise students to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice and find your nearest British embassy or consulate, in case you need to contact them in an emergency. It is also a good idea to leave copies of your contact details, insurance policy and itinerary with friends and family in the UK, as well as on your person.

If you need to speak to the University in the case of an emergency, you can call (+44)151 231 2222 at any time, with help available 24/7.

Once you arrive at your destination, you should register with the local police as soon as possible. It is important to know the emergency phone number of the country you are visiting and the laws and customs you should abide by.

If your passport becomes lost or stolen, you should contact the UK Passport Office as soon as possible.

Insurance

LJMU provides insurance for students studying abroad or undertaking an Erasmus+ traineeship. Note: students taking part in Go Global are not eligible for LJMU travel insurance and should arrange their own insurance.

If you need to make an urgent claim while you’re abroad, contact the numbers given on the back of your insurance document, quoting the policy reference number. If a claim is not urgent, wait until you’ve arrived back in the UK, either by contacting our Insurance Officer by email or by phone (+44)151 904 6431 or UMAL.

My child is currently abroad, what do I do in an emergency?

If your son/daughter is currently abroad on an LJMU programme and there is an emergency, you should contact your son/daughter immediately. If there is an emergency in their location and you are concerned for their safety, you should contact the nearest British Embassy.

If there is an emergency at home and you think your son/daughter needs to return to the UK sooner than planned, please call the Go Abroad Team on 0151 904 6470. You can also contact the University on 0151 231 2222, 24 hours a day in case of an emergency.

Student requirements

As a study abroad student you’ll be required to complete paperwork and promotional materials while you’re away. The requirements vary for each opportunity so please see below for your requirements.

You’ll be expected to check your LJMU emails while you’re abroad. You can also keep in touch with the Go Abroad Team via email or social media @LJMUGlobalOpps.

All students completing an international summer school must complete:

  • Photos/videos/social media posts, submitted to the Go Abroad team or @LJMUGlobalOpps
  • Critical reflection, submitted to the Go Abroad team once you return

Students studying abroad, taking part in an Erasmus traineeship or one of our summer school programmes may be required to complete work set by their programme of study. Please speak to your programme leader and International Mobility Coordinator (IMC) regarding this.

Follow your host’s procedures for non-attendance. Any unreported or unauthorised non-attendance may result in non-progression and the returning of grants. If you fail a module, you may be able to resit at your host institution. If you also fail the resit, you may be required to take extra credits when you return to LJMU.

Sharing your experiences abroad

As part of the study abroad exchange programme students are required to assist the Global Opportunities Team to promote to the next cohort and provide guidance and support as they go on their placements.

Promotion could be photographs or blog and vlog posts. You can send these to goabroad@ljmu.ac.uk. You can also tag us @LJMUGlobalOpps on Twitter and Instagram using #LJMUGoAbroad.

We also require students to help us promote all the Global Opportunities schemes once students return. We will invite all students to apply for the paid role of Global Champion in September each year. Your school and the Global Opportunities team may ask you to assist with promotion sessions and to support individual students with information about your host destination. It is important to LJMU students that they hear the genuine voice of other LJMU students.
