New solar panels installed at Redmonds Building

Works have been completed for the installation of 24 additional solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of Redmonds Building on the Mount Pleasant campus.

Annually, the panels are expected to generate approximately 8.4 mWh of electricity and save around 1.64 tonnes of CO2e – this is the equivalent of planting 75 trees every year.

Installing low and renewable energy technologies across the university estate is a key strand within the university’s Carbon Management Plan. Detailed feasibility studies have been conducted on LJMU buildings to evaluate roof spaces that would be suitable for solar panels as there needs to be adequate space, and the roof structure needs to be able to withstand their weight.

Further planned works this year to support decarbonising our estate include installing an air source heat pump and solar panels at John Lennon Art and Design Building, installing an air source heat pump at Max Perutz, and works to improve the efficiency of heating and/or lighting at James Parsons Building, Redmonds Building and John Foster Building.
