LJMU programme gives confidence for pupils to succeed

An LJMU programme for local schools is giving youngsters the “motivation and confidence that inner city pupils from Liverpool can succeed”.

The Access All Areas programme, led by the LJMU Outreach team, offers a range of opportunities for selected pupils to experience a host of activities and learn more about life at university.

The project with Mosslands and West Derby schools provides two sessions per year for male students through their Year 9-11 studies.

Following sessions on university life, accessing sport, education, technology, health and policing, the Year 11 group have now completed the programme with a university exchange and visit to London.

The boys came away with the knowledge that many of the barriers that are perceived by inner city pupils can be overcome, whether they are barriers of finance or mobility due to social / economic class. The pupils now have the motivation and confidence that inner city pupils from Liverpool can succeed and have the same opportunities regardless of their background.

Catherine Shillito, who leads the programme for LJMU Outreach, said: “A key aim of the programme is for pupils to realise their own potential and believe that university is for the many, not the few. We look forward to continuing to work with programme participants post-16 and throughout their sixth form education.”

Access All Areas is for male students in years 9-11.

Access Opportunity. Learn about next steps, different pathways, degree apprenticeships and work experience. Hear from an inspirational speaker.

Access All Areas. Exchange visit to a London university, opening pupils’ eyes to experiences and opportunities throughout the UK.
