Prestigious Bollywood Director hosts Liverpool film screening with LJMU

Bollywood Director, Ms Kiran Rao hosted a special screening of her recent hit move Laapataa Ladies in Liverpool with LJMU.

The Bollywood film screening held at Liverpool FACT was followed by a panel discussion with colleagues from LJMU’s Liverpool Screen School. The 2024 film follows the story of two brides whose lives become swapped and has been described in reviews as a “feminist movie” in which the female lead characters embark on a journey of self-discovery.

LJMU students, staff and the local community attended the screening with a Q&A with Director, Kiran Rao, following the event.

Ms. Rao selected Liverpool to be the site of the screening due to the connections built up between Mumbai and the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies at LJMU. Only last month, Amitosh Nagpal, a prestigious Bollywood writer, director, and actor, worked with visiting scholar, Krishan Jagota, to co-produce the theatrical production, Fireflies, with LJMU’s Liverpool Screen School students and staff, strengthening the connection between APSS and India.

Dr. Emma Roberts, Associate Dean for Global Engagement and one of the panel members said:

“It was my great pleasure to enhance the international links with India for LJMU staff and students, and for the people who live in the Liverpool City Region. It is a great privilege to welcome a Bollywood director of such esteemed stature as Kiran Rao to Liverpool. I thank our LJMU Visiting Scholar, Krishan Jagota, for being instrumental in facilitating such unique opportunities during his work with us in APSS.”
