Law students win Oriel Chambers Mooting Competition

Emily Shaw and Shay McSorley beat off competition from across LJMU, The University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University and Liverpool Hope University to be named the winners. 

The Oriel Chambers competition was held at the Athenaeum, Liverpool with 22 teams taking part.  

Students had to argue their cases before Senior Barristers on the panel who judged them on their legal knowledge, oratory skills, ability to answer questions, teamwork, court etiquette and counter arguments. 

LJMU entered three teams who all reached the semi finals, but it was Level 6 student Emily Shaw and Level 5 student Shay McSorley who were judged the winners. 

Mooting competitions are not part of students' course work and are an extracurricular activity for students in the law school. 

Shay McSorley said:

“After months of hard work and numerous rounds it has all been worth it. Thank you to Thomspon Chengeta, Muhammad Shaukat and Professor Carlo Panara and all the Team LJMU students who attended.” 

Emily Shaw added: 

“The competition was such an amazing experience and after months of hard work and dedication it has finally paid off. I am now looking forward to completing my mini pupillage with the chambers in the next few months too!”
