Canvas has been working on a new alternative quiz tool for some time. The Canvas New Quizzes will become the University's supported quiz tool, replacing the old one which is referred to as 'Classic' Quizzes.
New Quizzes introduces a range of new functionality, including additional question types, improved moderation options, enhanced accommodation settings and Item Banks for managing questions across courses.
What's is New Quizzes?
New Quizzes is Canvas's modern assessment engine, designed to provide greater flexibility when creating quizzes and tests, improved support for student accommodations, and enhanced options for managing question banks and feedback.
Many aspects of creating and delivering quizzes will feel familiar to staff who currently use Classic Quizzes, but there are some important differences in how quizzes are built and managed.
What's Changing?
Some of the key enhancements available in New Quizzes include:
-
Additional question types, including Hot Spot, Ordering and Categorisation questions.
-
Item Banks for storing and reusing questions across multiple modules.
-
Improved moderation and accommodation options for individual students.
-
Greater control over when grades, feedback and correct answers become visible to students.
-
Enhanced options for randomisation and question shuffling. Staff will also notice a new quiz building interface.
Staff will also notice a new quiz building interface. Unlike Classic Quizzes, selecting a New Quiz opens an assignment summary page first, with quiz content, settings and reports available through the Build option.
What About Existing Quizzes?
Existing Classic Quizzes can be migrated to New Quizzes using Canvas's migration tools.
While the migration process is straightforward, we strongly recommend that staff review migrated quizzes carefully and use the Preview function to confirm that questions, settings and grading behave as expected before making them available to students.
Classic Quizzes will remain available during the transition period, and the Teaching and Learning Academy will communicate future milestones and timelines well in advance of any changes to availability.
