Nick has a professional background in Adult and Children’s Nursing having trained at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street in London. He has worked as a Charge Nurse on a Dialysis Unit for Children and Young People and as a Nurse Specialist for Paediatric Haematology and HIV. Nick has also worked as a Youth Worker in a Sexual Health Service for Young People in Merseyside and has been seconded to Government Office for the North West where he was Implementation Lead for a Department of Health Project across Cumbria and Lancashire aimed at improving the accessibility and quality of Health Services for Young People. He has also been a volunteer Telephone Counsellor for ChildLine North West for several years.

Nick has undertaken numerous roles since joining LJMU including Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Childhood Studies and MSc Childhood in the C21; Principal Lecturer/ Head of Cross-School Development; Faculty Enterprise and Collaborative Partnerships Manager and Professional Lead for Child Health and Care. He has led curriculum development and delivery in several areas including Continuing Professional Development for the Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Workforce. He has been involved in enterprise and collaborative research and evaluation projects with numerous service providing organisations in the Health, Social Care and Education sectors. Examples include Wirral Children’s Fund, Toxteth Community College and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. He has also been involved in a British Council/ Department for International Development project in Jordan to develop multi-agency approaches to Safeguarding and Child Protection which led to further developments across the Middle East.

Nick is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society. He has held several External Examining positions and is currently an External Examiner for the BSc in Children’s Nursing at Anglia Ruskin University and Bangor University. He has been an Associate member of the Association of Chief Children’s Nurses and a member of The Liverpool Children’s Trust Partnership Healthy Lives Sub-Group and the Liverpool Safeguarding Children Board Learning and Improvement Sub-Group as well as the Cheshire and Mersey Clinical Strategic Network for Maternity, Children and Young People. He is currently a member of Children and Young People Nurse Academics U.K and has contributed to several projects at the Department of Health, including Care Pathway development for Children with Complex and Special Educational Needs and Young People’s Sexual Health. Nick is collaborating with colleagues on a research project to evaluate the Greater Merseyside Talent Match Project which aims to enhance opportunities for young people furthest away from education and employability. He has recently completed a pilot project for the Cheshire and Mersey Clinical Strategic Network exploring the experiences of young people with complex needs and disabilities who have recently transitioned from children's to adult services.

Nick’s previous role as Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) enabled him to combine academic teaching, professional leadership with contribution to the work of the management team of the Faculty of Education, Health and Community. He had lead responsibility for assuring and enhancing quality across its provision. This role also involves contributing to the assurance and enhancement at a University level as well as other strategic developments.

Nick is currently Programme Leader for the Advanced Paediatric Practitioner programme at LJMU and he also teaches on the BA (Hons) Health and Social Care for Individuals, Families and Communities.

Nick also works as a self-employed Advocate for Children and Young People on behalf of Liverpool City Council. He volunteers as a Diversity Role Model.
