Gerwyn joined LJMU in 2008 as a Senior Research Fellow at the European Institute for Urban Affairs. Prior to joining the Institute he worked as a research manager and subsequently senior research manager in the private research consultancy sector for ten years. Gerwyn was awarded and completed an ESRC CASE Studentship PhD scholarship at Liverpool University’s Geography Department. The research explored the role of consultants in urban regeneration, using Liverpool as a case study.

While working in the private consultancy sector and at LJMU Gerwyn has led research projects for multi-disciplinary teams and has been a co-investigator for a wide ranging client base, including: Central Government Departments, Local Government, the European Commission, ESPON, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Third Sector.

During his time at LJMU Gerwyn has been a co-investigator on an ESRC funded research programme looking at the impact of recession and austerity on the cities of Liverpool and Bristol, and how this has affected households, local authorities and key local economy stakeholders, such as the voluntary and community sector. He has also been a co-investigator on a national research programme looking at the work and impact of faith sector organisations in the fields of social justice and welfare, as part of the Together for the Common Good programme. Gerwyn was the lead investigator on a research project for Liverpool Council for Voluntary Services (LCVS) measuring the economic and social impact of the voluntary sector across the Liverpool City Region.

Gerwyn is Programme Leader for LJMUs MA Cities course and is Chair of the APSS Faculty Research Degrees Committee. He is passionate about developing young researchers, and has a strong track record in supporting graduates into funded PhDs, both at LJMU and other UK Universities.
