Surgical Art

Prof Vaiude's work at LJMU concentrates on postgraduate studies where there is a marriage of art and science, specifically surgery, and in particular the MA Art in Science Programme. He brings his surgical expertise and artistic understanding to the programme. Prof Vaiude is a champion of the practical application of the arts in surgical practice, and the merits of the collaborative influences of surgery on the arts. He develops his concepts, taking inspiration from fields as varied as fashion design to Venetian mask making, the performing arts to horology.

He is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon, educational innovator and managing director/faculty lead for Surgical Art - an innovative Liverpool based surgical training organisation. It is at Surgical Art (www.surgical-art.com) that Prof Vaiude spends much of his time bringing together his passions for surgery and art, teaching both surgical skills and the principles of art in relation to reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. To date he has trained surgeons from over 16 countries in courses covering:

Through Surgical Art he has a number of educational innovations to his credit, including The Surgical Art Face© , a facial reconstruction mask, which is internationally recognised.

Prof Vaiude collaborates frequently with other disciplines, especially to enhance the teaching of surgical skills at Surgical Art. He has collaborated with The Face Lab (LJMU) and contouring specialists to teach artistic perspectives for surgical practice, and actors and communication experts to teach communication and body language skills to surgeons. Prof Vaiude has worked with The Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons in the delivery of plastic surgery skills based courses. He has contributed to the artistic research study - Facing Out - exploring the impact of acquired facial disfigurement from head, face and neck cancers and their associated treatments. In an LJMU setting he has given a Leonardo Laser Talk, entitled An Artistic Exploration of Facial Topography in Surgical Practice and collaborated with The Face Lab to deliver a Liverpool Light Night event, sharing with the public facial anthropology and surgical reconstruction techniques.
Outside of Surgical Art and his activities at LJMU, Prof Vaiude has set up the first NHS reconstructive hair transplant service at Alder Hey Hospital, is a Medical Educator at Liverpool University and teaches allied health professionals at Edge Hill University. Here, he is also engaged in the development of the new medical school and is leading on a research study on the impact of reconstructive hair transplants for children with scars from burns or craniofacial surgery. Prof Vaiude also has a cosmetic surgery practice at Sthetix Cosmetic Clinic in Liverpool, where he brings together his surgical expertise and artistic skills.
