LJMU to participate in global Pint of Science Festival this May



Academics and postgraduate students from across LJMU will be sharing their research as part of the Pint of Science Festival programme this May. 

The worldwide science festival, which brings researchers to local cafes, pubs and venues to share scientific discoveries, comes to Liverpool from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 May 2026.

LJMU is showcasing research from across the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science, organised by the Schools of Biological and Environmental Sciences (Dr Simone Dürr) and Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences (Dr Gavin McStay). 

Tickets are £5 per person for each event.

LJMU venue: Murphy’s Distillery and Bar

LJMU researchers will be sharing their latest research and discoveries at Murphy’s Distillery and Bar, 8 Regent Road (between Byrom Street and the new Everton Football Club stadium).

Tea, coffee, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, and pizza (Margarita, Pepperoni or Meat Feast pizza pre-order by emailing jess@murphys-gin.com for just £13) are available for purchase. Alternatively, you are welcome to order food for delivery to the venue.

Monday 18 May, 7pm to 9pm  

AI, Robots and Galaxies!

Dr Fares Yousefi will explain security in the age of AI and emerging technologies; Dr Omar Aldhaibani will explore what happens when robots leave the lab and enter human (and dog) environments; and Dr Andreea Font, Rosie Bartlett and Salma Louhaichy will demonstrate how AI helps to decipher the history of our Milky Way.  

Tuesday 19 May, 7pm to 9pm 

Hearts, Pain and Nanotechnology!

Dr Richie Kirwan will discuss the impact of low carb, keto, and carnivore diets on our hearts; Dr Charlotte Krahe will introduce you to human pain perception and the impact of your social environment; and Dr Jon Ashley will host the DNA Origami and its nanoscale machines.

Wednesday 20 May, 7pm to 9pm 

Lionfish, Gouldians and the Ice Age!

Dr Monica McCard will dive with you into the beautiful coral reefs, home of the invasive and relentless predator, the lionfish; Professor Claudia Mettke-Hofmann will take us to Australia, to learn about the anti-predator approaches at waterholes by Gouldian finches; and Dr Rui Leite Portela Martiniano will reveal Ice Age Ireland’s lost ecosystems and identifies mammoths, hyenas and bears using DNA methodology.
