More opportunities to study abroad after £1m grant

Dozens more students can now study or work abroad as part of their LJMU experience after the university doubled its Turing Scheme funding to more than £1m. Turing Scheme.

The money will enable students to travel the world to enjoy exchanges, internships, summer school and other study, work and volunteering opportunities.

Julia Wang, Director of International Relations, said: “The average grant for each HEi is around £460k, so we are very pleased with the outcome.

“The grants go towards living costs for students while abroad and we will be prioritising students from a disadvantaged background.”

Students can apply for Turing Funding via the Global Opportunities Team but first must make  an application for one of our Global Opportunities - Study Abroad, Global Citizen / Volunteering Programme, International Summer School and International Internship Programme. All programmes will be launched shortly on our Instagram @ljmuglobalopps.

Turing Funding also supports Faculty and School projects, in 2024-25 over 55 projects will take place, providing an opportunity for 300 undergraduate, masters and PhD students from across the university to undertake an international placement.

LJMU has now won Turing Funding in each year since the scheme was established by the Department for Education as a replacement for the European Union Erasmus Programme.

The extra funding - £1million, the most we have ever been awarded - will enable us to increase the number of students who undertake a global opportunity by just over 50%.

LJMU Global Citizen Programmes and International Summer Schools take place between May and August whilst School placements occur throughout the academic year.

Most of our students also have an opportunity to undertake a period of study overseas - for one semester or as an additional year - with one of our international exchange partners.  To be eligible for Turing Funding global opportunities must be a minimum duration of 28 days and take place between 01/09/202024 and 31/08/2025.
