Liverpool Screen School
Our specialities and research
Producing high-quality research.
Liverpool Screen School has two main research clusters – Journalism, Media and Communication, as well as Culture, Identity and Policy. Within these areas our research teams explore a range of fields, from film studies to best practice within journalism.
Thanks to our blend of theory and practice, in the most recent research assessment (Research Excellence Framework 2021) 54% of our submitted work was rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
In particular, our research into identity construction and security discourse has demonstrated an outstanding impact on the policy debate and policy-making in conflict prevention in East Asia. Our work on documenting adaptation to sea level rise in the Philippines has also gained an international reputation, which has contributed to the reframing of the international debate and the UN’s intervention in this policy area. In addition, our research into the cultural significance of place and identity in the writer Malcolm Lowry’s life and work has helped inform and develop Bluecoat’s strategic approach to presenting contemporary art.
In addition to our achievements within research, our School is also known for the strong links we have forged with local, national and international companies and institutions, including the BBC, ITV, Reach Plc, Sky, Lime Pictures, Classic FM, ZUMC in Hangzhou and the Institute of the Arts, Barcelona. We also organise the Liverpool Film Seminar series and are involved in Doc/Fest and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. These partnerships offer a wealth of opportunities for both staff and students.
"Through our strong links with the creative and digital sector, Liverpool Screen School provides a vibrant, industry focused learning environment. Our students are encouraged to be creative and innovative, professional in their approach to work, and ambitious in their aspirations."
