Safeguarding and critical incidents

This session will look at the provision that LJMU puts in place to be able to safeguard its student population, providing relevant support and referrals, and to be able to respond to critical incidents, including the death of a student. This will be made up of both internal policy and external legislation.
Ahead of the session, partners may wish to read the following LJMU policies: LJMU Safeguarding Policy; LJMU Critical Incident and Death of a Student policy.

Harassment and Sexual misconduct

The Office for Students has recently announced a new regulatory condition for universities - E6 Harassment and Sexual Misconduct. The session will cover the work that LJMU has done, and still has to do, to ensure compliance ahead of the 1st of August 2025 activation date.
There will be information on the impact this duty will have on providers as part of the overall N/A - online university compliance.

Enhancing student employability, from strategy to delivery

The session will offer an overview of LJMU’s approach to progressing student employability and graduate outcomes, including both the rationale and 2024/25 context for the core pillars of:
- developing employability skills and mindset and career agility
- assessed work-based learning for all undergraduates
- job creation and business creation in the Liverpool City Region
Examples of how these have been translated into practice will be offered, both within and outside of the curriculum, and considerations relating to course design and operational delivery will be highlighted.

Decolonial Technologies: AI and Indigenous Knowledge in Digital Humanities

This session will explore how AI and Digital Humanities are transforming the study of Mexican pre-colonial and colonial historical documents, focusing on decolonising approaches and uncovering indigenous knowledge. Unlike many Western applications of AI, which are centred on Western historical and cultural narratives, this session highlights the use of advanced technologies to analyse and engage with indigenous knowledge through manuscripts and paintings. By presenting case studies, this talk will introduce innovative methods that prioritise ethical and inclusive practices, offering a distinct perspective on integrating technology with cultural heritage and digital collections.
Student Engagement and Support in Collaborative Programmes - The Academic Approach

The presentation explores strategies for enhancing student involvement and providing effective support in collaborative educational settings. It highlights the importance of fostering a sense of community in an online asynchronous environment, utilising active learning techniques, and providing tailored academic support to meet the diverse needs of today's students.
The presentation covers best practices for facilitating collaboration among students and between students and tutors. It investigates the role of faculty in mentoring and guiding students and the implementation of technology to support these actions. Emphasis is placed on creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation, thereby enhancing academic success and achieving academic excellence within an online asynchronous yet effective academic environment.

Writing for Wellbeing Workshop

This workshop was offered as a ‘taster’ to the practice of ‘expressive writing for wellbeing’, based on principles from poetry/bibliotherapy. The focus of this approach is on the process of writing rather than the product; as such, it opens up an alternative portal into self-knowledge and understanding. Attendees benefitted from sharing general and personal reflections about this process of writing for the self. Here are some comments from previous workshop participants:

“It feels good to unload on the page!”

Progress Towards De-Colonising the Curriculum at LJMU

How to Deliver Engaging and Sustainable Online Learning

The Alef Trust is an online education provider and partner of LJMU, delivering programmes validated by LJMU. The organisation has a global student constituency, engaging mature learners from diverse professions in Master’s and PhD level study. Programmes are delivered entirely online; and in this session they shared how they engage students in blended learning processes, balancing rigorous academic study with experiential and applied learning. They placed particular emphasis on how they endeavour to make online learning sustainable for students, given that student wellbeing has been challenged worldwide by unprecedented crises, causing social, financial and psychological insecurities and distress.

One of the aims of Oryx Universal College is to become one of the best providers of tertiary education in Qatar, and also one of the best in the Middle East. An essential element that will contribute to this is the quality of education that they provide to their students. They are working hard to give their students the best possible student experience they can have. They believe that a good starting point is to take Student Wellbeing and Success seriously, and to kick this off they are taking personal tutoring to a level not seen in universities in the area, and to a level at par with what is done in UK universities at the minimum.Resources

This session demonstrated the recommended ways of creating, deploying and marking an assessed piece of work using Canvas assignments and the Turnitin framework. This session also demonstrated a number of feedback systems, such as rubrics, which are an excellent means of ensuring consistency when marking, particularly when used as part of a team.

An Introduction to Self-Help Library and Study Skills Resources

This session provided an overview of the types of self-help resources available to students through LJMU Library Services and how these resources can be used to promote independent study. There was also an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and highlight good practice.
Library Services provide a range of self-help resources on library skills and academic study skills, from user-friendly introductions to search skills and academic writing, through to more advanced support resources, including how to reference appropriately, presentation skills and critical thinking (please see the links below).

Online Solutions: a Strategy for Organisational Resilience

This session discussed how online solutions, originally designed by Unicaf to overcome the challenges of higher education delivery capacity in Africa, might become increasingly relevant to post-pandemic organisational resilience in the global North. From a standing start of just 15 students at its inception in 2012, Unicaf now serves over 30,000 students within its collaborative TNE partnerships. The session explored the benefits and challenges of online delivery throughout the student journey, from recruitment to graduation.
