Hats Off! From the Beatles to Ladies Day!

Liverpool ONE has unveiled a special exhibition in collaboration with fashion communication students at Liverpool John Moores University.

The installation, which will be on Paradise Street until the end of May, showcases a timeline of headwear fashion in Liverpool's history, honouring various styles worn through the ages, including dockworkers' flat caps, The Beatles' Breton mariner caps, LFC bobble hats, and the much-loved hats and fascinators of Ladies Day.

Jacqueline McAssey, Senior Lecturer at LJMU, said: “This project has enabled our students to explore the history and the heritage of headwear within our city, looking into the evolution of trends throughout the years and how we have carried forward styles into the present day.

“We’re excited to unveil our exhibition and delighted to be part of Liverpool ONE’s storytelling.”

Pictured are Wallis Newitt and Niamh Baldrian-McHale, L6 Fashion: Communication students who produced a series of photographs for the project.

They were supported by Jacqui, Marc Provins, Nicole Watkinson, Dr Lee Wright with hat contributions from Dr Emma Roberts.

The students' work sits alongside photographs by Sarah Deboe from, MINT is Culture and Anthony Wilde, plus historical images by documentary photographer Bert Hardy, sourced via the Liverpool Record Office.  The exhibition runs until end of May.
