You can edit out parts of your video that you don't want. You can remove:
- The beginning or end of the video
- Sections in the middle
- Just the video stream (keeping the audio)
- Just the audio stream (keeping the video)
Why would you do this?
- You made a mistake
- Some information is not relevant to the session
- Someone has asked to be removed from the recording
- For step-by-step instructions on editing, see How to Edit a Video
You can join two videos together. This means if you want to add new information to the middle of an existing recording, you can:
- Remove the old middle section
- Record a separate video with the new information
- Add it into the old video
Why would you do this?
- Information has changed and needs updating
- You want to add a new example or explanation
- You want to improve a section without re-recording the whole video
- You've created a better explanation of a difficult topic
- This is useful because you don't have to re-record the entire video, just the part that needs changing.
- For step-by-step instructions on splicing videos, see How to Use Add a Clip to Splice Multiple Sessions Together
You should not record YouTube videos off the screen. This looks bad and you don't have permission to do this.
Instead, use the Panopto editing tool to add a link to the YouTube video. When students watch your recording:
- Your video will play
- It will pause and switch to the YouTube video
- After the YouTube video finishes, it will switch back to your recording
This way, the YouTube video is incorporated perfectly at the highest quality.
Why do this?
- It looks professional
- You're respecting copyright
- Students get the best quality playback
- You can use content from YouTube to support your teaching
For step-by-step instructions on embedding YouTube videos, see How to Embed a YouTube Video into a Panopto Video
Watching videos can be very passive. But what if you could stop the video and ask students a question? You can do this in Panopto.
You can add quiz questions at any point in your video. This makes learning more active.
Why do this?
- It helps students stay engaged
- Students can check their understanding
- It breaks up long videos
- It encourages active learning rather than passive watching
When is it worth the effort?
Adding quizzes takes extra time, so it's especially worth doing if:
- The video will be watched by lots of students
- You'll use the video for several years
- The topic is particularly important or difficult
- For step-by-step instructions on adding quizzes, see How to Add a Quiz to a Video
