The following process is seen as best practice. It streamlines the process for both staff and students.
How students can create their recordings:
Students have several options for creating their video:
Using the Panopto mobile app:
- Record and submit directly through the app
- Create a video on their phone first, then upload it through the app
- Students can choose to turn off their video if they don't want to show themselves
Using a desktop or laptop:
- Record directly in Panopto
- This has an advantage - they can include PowerPoint slides in their recording
- Students can choose to turn off their video if they don't want to show themselves
Using other tools:
- Record using PowerPoint or another tool
- Upload the finished video to Panopto
- They can edit the video outside of Panopto before uploading, or edit it in Panopto after uploading (though editing in Panopto is complex)
Students can find video assignments daunting for several reasons. Careful communication can help improve their experience and reduce anxiety.
Technology challenges:
- Some students struggle with the technology
- Some students may only have access to a mobile phone
- Let students know they can record at the library or in more private spaces on campus
Tips to help students succeed:
- Set up a trial run - let students practice submitting a test video before the real assignment
- Give clear deadlines - tell them to submit early, not at the last minute, in case they have technical problems
- Provide clear instructions - create a step-by-step guide for your students
Some students may struggle with recording their own image or voice. They might worry about these parts of the video that you're not even marking.
How to help:
- Be clear about why they need to record themselves
- Explain exactly what you're interested in when marking
- Tell them what matters and what doesn't (for example, "I'm marking your explanation, not your appearance")
- If possible, give options about what is recorded (for example, just voice without video)
- If possible, take time to review the video with students afterwards to:
- Point out what they did well
- Give feedback on their presentation skills
- Reassure them about their concerns
This feedback helps students learn and builds their confidence for future presentations.
