Panopto accessibility and captions

Videos can be a great way to help all students learn. They let students watch and listen to content, and review it as many times as they need. This is especially helpful for students who:

  • Have English as a second language
  • Need to review difficult topics
  • Missed a class
  • Prefer learning by watching and listening

Understanding the limitations

While videos are helpful, they do have some limitations:

  • Automated captions can have mistakes in them
  • Videos don't usually have audio descriptions (where someone describes what's happening on screen for people who can't see it)

What you can do to help

There are actions you can take to make your videos more accessible for all students. This section will show you how to:

  • Check and fix caption errors
  • Add captions to your videos
  • Make your videos easier for everyone to use

Even though automated captions aren't perfect, they are still very useful. Having captions and transcripts helps many students access your content more easily.
