Managing Panopto Recordings

This section will help you manage and organise your Panopto videos. You'll learn how to copy videos to new courses, understand the different types of folders (like 'My Folder' and assessment folders), archive old recordings, and view statistics to see who has watched your videos.

Understanding different types of folders in Panopto

Panopto has different types of folders to help you organise your videos. Each type of folder works in a different way.

My Folder

This is your private space. Videos you put in 'My Folder' are not automatically shared with anyone else. You control who can see each recording.

Good things about My Folder:

  • It's private
  • You decide who can watch each video
  • Good for videos you want to share with many different courses (like a video showing a lab technique)

Things to watch out for:

  • You have to organise everything yourself
  • This takes time
  • You might make mistakes about who can see what

Course folders (automatic)

When you connect Panopto to a Canvas course, a folder is created automatically. Any students on that course can see videos in that folder.

When to use course folders:

  • Recordings for a specific course (like lecture capture)
  • Videos that are just for one group of students

Manually created folders

  • You can create your own folders in Panopto. You can put recordings in these folders and share them with any user in the system.
  • When to use manually created folders:
  • Videos you want to share across many courses or years
  • Generic content that lots of students might need (like videos showing lab techniques)
  • This way you have one copy and just share the link

Assessment folders

These are special folders where students can submit video assignments. Please see the related page about student video submissions for more information.
