PGR international placements funding

LJMU Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) can now apply for funding to support international placements taking place between March and August 2025. The aim of the funding is to help you to gain valuable international experience, improve your intercultural communication skills, expand your networks, and boost your employability.

The placements are partly funded by the Turing Scheme (the UK Government's global programme for studying and working abroad) and partly funded by the Doctoral Academy.

Placements can either relate directly to your doctoral research OR enable you to develop transferable skills, knowledge and networks outside of academia.

You should discuss ideas for a placement with your PhD supervisors before applying for funding. Your supervisors may have relevant networks and may be able to help you to identify a relevant host institution or organisation, but it is up to you to organise the placement. A named contact at your placement institution will need to provide a supporting statement at the time of your application. You will also need to include a brief supporting statement from your LJMU Lead Supervisor. Please note that the funding is competitive and the outcome is not guaranteed.

To be eligible, placements need to run for a minimum of 28 days (not including travel days) and end by the 31 August 2025. They can start any time from the 17 March onwards. Placements can only take place in LJMU approved destinations, and you must always follow LJMU travel regulations and foreign travel advice.
