Funding is calculated on the duration and location of your country of placement, in accordance with Turing Funding requirements. Countries are grouped into two categories as set by the UK government. A full list of country groups can be found on the Department of Education website here.
The Doctoral Academy will match fund the daily rates to help with costs, so the total daily rates are as follows:
Placements between 28-56 days
Group 1 destinations (higher cost of living): £38 per day
Group 2 destinations (lower cost of living): £34 per day
Total daily rate if you meet any of Widening Participation criteria:*
Group 1 destinations (higher cost of living): £46 per day
Group 2 destinations (lower cost of living): £42 per day
Placements longer than 57 days
Group 1 destinations (higher cost of living): £28 per day
Group 2 destinations (lower cost of living): £24 per day
Total daily rate if you meet any of Widening Participation criteria:*
Group 1 destinations (higher cost of living): £36 per day
Group 2 destinations (lower cost of living): £32 per day
*Students are considered widening participation if they fulfil one of the below criteria:
- Have an annual household income of £25,000 or less
- Receive Universal Credit or income-related benefits.
- Care leavers and care experienced students.
- Students who have caring responsibilities for a family member or friend.
- Estranged students.
- Refugees and asylum seekers.
If you meet any of the widening participation criteria above, you will also receive a Travel Grant (WP Travel Grant rates). For all other students, there is no separate payments for travel to the placement destination, so you will need to pay for the cost of travel and visas from the daily budget, or apply for other sources of funding to cover travel costs.
Friday 7 February 2025: deadline for PGRs to apply using this online form. As part of the application you will need to include an overview of the proposed activity, a supporting statement from a contact at your placement organisation, and a statement from your Lead Supervisor.
Monday 17 February: notification of outcome of application. If successful, you will be referred to the International Relations team to complete paperwork relating to your grant. Once a grant agreement is in place, 80% of the total funding will be paid to you one month before departure, with the remaining 20% on your return to the UK and submission of all documents.
Placements should start no earlier than 17 March 2025, in order to allow enough time for payments to be made. All travel must be completed by 31 August 2025.
Supporting Statements
You should attach two supporting statements to your application:
1. A brief statement of support from your LJMU Lead Supervisor. This should:
- confirm that the supervisor is supportive of the proposed placement
- include anticipated benefits of the placement to the PGR's research and/or professional development, and any wider benefits to LJMU if relevant (eg potential for future collaborations)
- confirm that the PGR has made good academic progress so far, and that the placement will not interfere with the PGR's ability to meet progression milestones on time
2. A brief statement of support from a contact at the host institution. This should outline:
- the agreed programme of activity for the period of the placement
- the facilities that the PGR will have access to as part of the placement
- any wider benefits of the placement, if relevant (eg. future collaborations)
