Overview
Dr. José M. Prieto Garcia is a scholar with extensive expertise in the field of natural products, particularly phytochemistry and pharmacognosy. His career spans over two decades, marked by significant contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership. Currently, he serves as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the Centre for Natural Products Discovery at Liverpool John Moores University.
Academic Background
Dr. Prieto Garcia's academic journey began with two EU-funded postgraduate research positions, one at the University of Pisa's Department of Bioorganic Chemistry and the other at the University of London's School of Pharmacy. These positions laid the foundation for his subsequent appointment as a Lecturer in Pharmacognosy at the Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy at the University of London, where he held the position from 2006 to 2012. Following the incorporation of the School into University College London, Dr. Prieto Garcia assumed the role of Course Director for the Master in Pharmacognosy/Master in Medicinal Natural Products and Phytochemistry, a position he held from 2012 to 2020.
Research Expertise
Dr. Prieto Garcia's research focuses on natural products pharmacology and chemistry, with a particular emphasis on anticancer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. His research also encompasses metabolic interactions with drugs and the application of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, next-generation sequencing, and advanced analytical techniques.
Teaching and Academic Leadership
Dr. Prieto Garcia is a dedicated educator who has supervised the completion of over ten PhDs. He is also a prolific author, with over 90 impact factor journal publications and numerous presentations at scientific conferences. His commitment to academic excellence has earned him a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy since 2010.
Industry Engagement
Dr. Prieto Garcia actively engages with the herbal medicine, food supplement, and cosmetic industries, providing expert consultancy services in various areas, including THRM registration advice, expert reports, indications, formulation design and development, analytical method development, biostandardization, and the application of artificial intelligence to product design.
Research Supervision Opportunities
Dr. Prieto Garcia welcomes inquiries from self-funded PhD candidates with an interest in any of his research areas. He is open to the possibility of candidates completing a significant portion of their PhD studies remotely, depending on the research topic (for those based on fieldwork or computational studies).
