Helen Poole is Director of the School of Psychology and Professor of Applied Health Psychology at LJMU.
She is a full member of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Health Psychology (75980) and a Health Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (PYL19724). Helen combines academic leadership and teaching, with research and consultancy at LJMU. She supervises Professional Doctorate trainees, MSc Health Psychology students and teaches health psychology and research methods.
As an Applied Health Psychologist, much of her research is carried out in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and clinical populations. It focuses on the psychosocial impact of long term conditions, particularly chronic pain and cancer. Experienced in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research, she has developed Patient Reported Outcome Measures for neuropathic pain and people on multiple medications. Her research has been funded by a range of bodies including: NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, Pharmaceutical Companies, European Regional Development Fund and charities (Pain Relief Foundation, Burdett Trust for Nursing).
Current funded projects include development and implementation of an educational intervention with medical and non-medical prescribers to reduce opiod prescribing in chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP); evaluation of an intervention to support patients with CNCP reducing or stopping opioids; understanding the impact of COVID-19 in oncology health professionals, nurses and patients with cancer; and a study to explore reasons for emergency admissions in patients with cancer and complex co-morbidities,
