I joined Liverpool John Moores University, School of Psychology as a Senior lecturer in Psychology in Sept 2021. I was previously at the University of Liverpool for 11 years, after moving from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London. I was awarded my PhD in Experimental Psychology (2006) from the University of Sussex. This investigated the psychological mechanisms of action underlying alcohol priming and risks for binge drinking behaviour.

My lab-based research focuses on understanding the psychological mechanisms driving, and impacted by, alcohol use. Funded research has sought to understand how the the subjective value of alcohol influences drinking behaviour, using theoretical frameworks of associative learning and value-based decision making.

Following maternity leave, my work developed to bridge the areas of experimental work and applied health research. Broadly, I am interested in girls' and women's alcohol use across the life span, and how the role alcohol plays may change to address the needs of different life stages.

My mixed methods research is focused at an individual-level, community-level, and whole systems approach on the associations between alcohol use, mental health, and wellbeing. I collaborate with local and national organisations to increase awareness of alcohol use and harm in women and young people. I work with a range of public advisors, representing a variety of lived experience concerning alcohol use, perinatal mental health, and birth trauma.

Overall, my academic goals are to raise awareness of alcohol harm and the factors that increase risk of direct and indirect harm (such as health inequalities). From this information, I work with others to develop effective ways to reduce alcohol harm in a compassionate and non-stigmatising way.
