After a three-year apprenticeship scheme, where Steffen became a qualified real estate manager by the chamber of commerce of Berlin, he started studying at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. During his undergraduate studies, he gained practical experiences at Jones Lang LaSalle (Portfolio Investment and in the Valuation department) and Siemens Real Estate (RE Management). After the successful completion of his undergraduate, Steffen studied Real Estate Finance and Investment at the Henley Business School (Reading, UK). During that time Steffen got introduced to the idea of a career in academia. Since 2019 Steffen holds a PhD from the Henley Business School, University of Reading (UK). His research has so far been focusing on sentiment in the European commercial real estate market. Besides more established methods such as the application of sentiment proxies, he applied a range of Natural Language Processing and Topic Modelling techniques to the field. In general, his work is situated in the fields of behavioural finance and real estate finance and investment. Steffen was awarded the Best PhD Paper Award on the Annual ERES Conference in Regensburg, Germany in 2016. Other research interests are linked to the housing market. Steffen gained further practical experiences towards the end of his PhD. First as the deputy head of the research department of a national real estate brokerage. Later he became a Senior Data Analyst for a national real estate investment firm. In 2020, Steffen joined the Department of Built Environment as a Senior Lecturer at the John Moores University in Liverpool. His teaching duties include real estate management and real estate investment.
