Mark is a Reader in Interdisciplinary Digital Visualisation at Liverpool School of Art and Design and a member of the award-winning Face Lab research group that explores faces and art-science applications. Mark trained as a medical artist, gaining his MSc in Medical Art from the University of Dundee, and specialises in visualising anatomy through 3D data acquisition, modelling and fabrication. His research focuses on the affordances that 3D digital technologies allow for both digital and haptic interaction with anatomy and cultural artefacts. He is the host of the art-science Liverpool LASER Talks (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous), a member of the University Research Ethics Committee, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Teaching:
Mark is programme leader for the MA Art in Science programme, and the Art & Design Foundation Year (Level 3) coordinator at Liverpool School of Art and Design. He is also the Link Tutor for the International Foundation Year Certificate at London College for Design and Fashion (LCDF) in Hanoi.

Research:
Mark’s practice-led research focuses on the affordances that 3D digital technologies allow for both digital and haptic interaction with anatomy and people from the past. In Face Lab he has further developed 3D texturing (CGI), animation and printing methods to aid in the depiction of ancient and historic faces from skeletal remains for display in a museum context. These methods offer different ways of presenting faces, facilitate different modes of interaction by the publics, and further scientific and public debate relating to the display and interpretation of human remains globally. They have been applied in the facial depiction of more than 25 faces since 2014, which have been presented in international exhibitions, academic publications and the media, including depictions of high-profile figures from world history such as King Robert the Bruce, St Nicholas, Robert Burns and Ramesses II.

As an award-winning Medical Artist, Mark’s research and professional activity has contributed to the advancement of 3D digital art practice for medical illustrators nationally and internationally. He is actively contributing to the medical art field as a faculty member for Surgical Art, which trains reconstructive plastic surgeons via activities that promote alternative learning of facial anatomy through artistic methods. Currently, Mark is working with a multi-disciplinary team working between LJMU's Fab Lab, the School of Nursing and Advanced Practice, and the North West Endoscopy Academy to collaboratively develop 'Digital and Synthetic Training Models for Endoscopic Mucosal Resection' through innovative use of digital 3D online and printed models, and organic bioplastics, to enhance realism in endoscopic surgical training.

The cultural impact of Mark’s work with Face Lab and his art-science public engagement activities provide a novel contribution to teaching, the REF Environment and external profile of LJMU. ‘Art’ and ‘Science’ are frequently viewed as increasingly different disciplines in Higher Education and they often exist in silos, located in different faculties or on different campuses, with methods and practices at conflict with each other. Through Face Lab and the MA Art in Science programme, Mark is encouraging and facilitating meaningful art and science interactions where artists and scientists work directly with the creative and speculative possibilities that the intersection of these disciplines afford - in both educational environments and community settings. Mark continues to support students, colleagues and local/national institutions in inclusive cross-institutional dialogue, development of inter-multi-transdisciplinary practice, and provides public engagement activities that engage local and national communities in a two-way dialogue about research and its impact on society.

Face Lab
Face Lab is part of the Forensic Research Institute (FORRI) at LJMU. Face Lab focuses on digital creative research that explores faces and art-science applications, including craniofacial analysis, 3D/4D facial depiction and animation, and forensic art, using state of the art technology. As a member of the Face Lab research group since its inception in 2014, Mark’s 3D modelling, texturing and animation skills, alongside knowledge of CT data reconstruction practice, 3D scanning and 3D printing are used to aid in craniofacial reconstruction and for presentation of facial depictions to public audiences.

Mark’s Face Lab research outputs have featured in TV programmes including shows televised on BBC and France 3 for which Mark was interviewed and demonstrated his facial depiction texturing methods. Beyond media circulation, facial depictions that Mark has co-authored have been displayed in temporary exhibitions or displays at museums and galleries, including Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum in Baltimore, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Archaeological Pilgrim Museum in Globasnitz; Museum Burghalde in Lenzburg; Bryggens Museum in Bergen; Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum in Emden, and Palace Green Library at Durham Cathedral; each visited by local and international visitors.

MA Art in Science
Art and Science are often seen as two different entities with very separate ideas of what constitutes research. Co-developed by Mark Roughley and Professor Caroline Wilkinson, the MA Art in Science programme at Liverpool School of Art and Design brings together artists and scientists to explore collaborative approaches in Art and Science research and practice. From anatomy to algorithms, pixels to performance, science to semiotics, the programme supports creative curiosity in partnership with experts across the University and beyond.

Liverpool LASER Talks
Liverpool LASER Talks is part of the worldwide series of Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous (LASER) Talks sponsored by Leonardo, the International Society for Art, Sciences and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST). LASER talks are an international programme of free evening gatherings that bring artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations on art, science and technology.

Career History:
Mark graduated with BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation from Manchester School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to specialise as a Medical Illustrator, having gained his MSc in Medical Art from the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification, in collaboration with the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee. Medical Art is the study of anatomy, pathology, medicine and surgery with the aim of creating illustrations, animations, models and innovative designs that push the boundaries of education, communication and teaching with reliable accuracy.

Mark has previously worked as a Lecturer for the MSc Medical Art course at the University of Dundee. Module leader in Life Art, Medical Art 1 (Anatomical Illustration), Medical Art 2 (Surgical Illustration) and research project supervisor https://www.dundee.ac.uk/postgraduate/medical-art. He has also worked as a Medical Illustrator and Digital Learning Technologist for the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, School of Dentistry at the University of Dundee, and Scottish Dental Education Online (SDEO) (https://www.sdeo.ac.uk) an NHS Education for Scotland funded project creating illustrations and visualisations to enhance student learning and for patient information material.

Mark is a professional member of the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) and the Association Européenne des Illustrateurs Medicaux et Scientifiques (AEIMS).

Digging for Britain joins Ministry of Defence archaeologist Richard Osgood on an island near Portsmouth with members of Operation Nightingale, a military initiative using archaeology to aid in the recovery of service personnel injured in conflict. Face Lab produced the facial reconstruction.

Face Lab LJMU at University Alliance National Event. Face Lab has taken centre stage at a national event showcasing universities’ role in driving growth in the creative economy. Face Lab was specially selected to appear at an interactive showcase: Making Places: Universities, the arts and creative industries, as a shining example of how universities are acting as custodians and champions of the arts. Face Lab’s Professor Caroline Wilkinson and Mark Roughley demonstrated the range of capabilities of the innovative, cutting-edge facial depiction technology – which has applications ranging from forensic identification to archaeological reconstruction – at the prestigious event at London’s Southbank Centre. National leaders in the creative industries attending the event included Darren Henley, CEO of Arts Council England and LJMU Honorary Fellow.
